In AD122 the Roman Emperor Hadrian ordered the construction of a wall across Britain to define the furthest edge of his dominions. Despite the depredations of the centuries, parts of it still stand, bestriding a spacious countryside of wide-open skies haunted only by the mournful cry of the curlew. This particular walk follows the best section of the Wall.
Day 1: Arrive Whitley Bay
Day 2: Whitley Bay to Wylam / Heddon on the Wall 15 Miles (24km)
Day 3: Wylam to Humshaugh 16.5 miles
Day 4: Humshaugh to Housesteads (Once brewed) 12 miles (19.3 km)
Day 5: Once Brewed to Lanercost / Banks 13 Miles .
Day 6: Lannercost to Carlisle 13 miles
Day 7: Carlisle to Bowness on Solway 15 miles
Day 8: Departure
Any day from mid March to mid October.
